Here it is my last week here and I still haven’t eaten the watermelon that I bought in the first few days I was here. Odd considering that if I was at “home” I would be eating 1 every 3 days. I have been eating a lot of tomatoes and bananas. Like unbelievable amounts of banana.
Everyone is sick right now. Woke up a few days ago with a sore throat, today it seems a lot better. I think it is from running here, huffing and puffing all sorts of red clay into my lungs. I am hoping that we are at 10,000 ft elevation and that I am not really THAT out of shape.
Saturday was market day in Nairobi, almost all of the volunteers went. First things first, Savannah coffee house, nothing like an overpriced cup of coffee and vege sandwich. After brunch we made our way to the Maasai Market, it only took 6 female brains and directions from 3 strangers to get there. Once we got there we all split up. Vendors had their goods set up on potato sac like tarps on the ground. Very much similar to the “anything you like I do for you” just with an African accent instead. I picked up a few things, Kristie bartered for me and I did the same for her. For some reason it is easier to be rude and pushy for a good price when it isn’t the item you want.
Last stop Tuskys, the supermarket where you can get essential western items like chocolate, hot sauce and toilet paper. Was wishing I had a hand cart to lug all my goods to the matato stage. Lots of creepy, old drunk men at this particular matato stage, one that is probably making my mother’s skin crawl just thinking about it. My “bitch” look is getting really good, if that doesn’t do the trick my elbowing skills are impeccable. Had words with the matato conductor because he wanted us to give him more money after he dropped us off. Everyone wants Mzungu price on Saturdays apparently, I was having none of it. What a day.
Super Sunday. Woke up with Angelina Jolie lips again this morning, I must be allergic to something. Had my morning coffee and then jumped into my running shoes and ran like the wind to Makuyu. I felt like Forrest Gump with all the kids running behind me and people staring at me. Had a shower and then headed into town with my Aussies for some chapatti and cabbage, which they were out of. Ordered roasted potatoes instead and it took about 1 hour and 15 minute. We were convinced that they were digging them from the ground at the time of order or something. Worth the wait, they were divine.
Ran into my old buddy Sysco the Pro soccer player with the two wives. Met him a few weeks back at The Travelers Inn, he was with Red Shirt Guy who wouldn’t stop staring. I showered after my run and I tell you what people were noticing. EVERYONE was gawking today. I got some amazing produce on the side of the street and I swear there were probably 20 people following me and about 100 if not more watching me buy avocados. Everytime I would say something everyone would start laughing. It was like if Jennifer Aniston were walking through dt Juneau. I am a celeb here!!!
Had a grope free matato ride back to the orphanage, now I am just waiting for dinner so I can eat some of the awesome produce I got. I will gag if I have to eat ugali and beans again. I’m such a spoiled American.

Your "bitch" face must be improving. A grope free matato ride is unheard of. Good job!
